Working paper n°65: Bishkek Undergrounds as Kyrgyzstan’s Key Spaces of Contemporary Art

IFEAC is pleased to announce the publication of Working Paper n° 65 by Dilda RAMAZAN, a PhD student at EUR’ORBEM, Sorbonne University, and recipient of an AMI IFEAC 2025 grant.

The Working paper explores the emergence of contemporary art in Kyrgyzstan through the appropriation of underground spaces. Inherited from marginal practices of the late Soviet period, these sites became platforms for artistic and political expression in the 2000s. Through two case studies, the paper examines the spatial, institutional, and symbolic dynamics shaping the post-Soviet art scene in Bishkek.

Key-words: Bishkek, spatiality, alternative vision, contemporary art, Central Asia

Summary
Within the history of the emergence of contemporary art in the Central Asian region, the Kyrgyz capital plays a crucial role. A close analysis of its inner cultural context, however, reveals the importance of the underground spaces reimagined by local artists, which persists from the dawn of this new type of art (late 1980s-early 1990s) to the present day. Why are the undergrounds being targeted by the artists? And what does it inform us about the Kyrgyz art scene today?
