IFEAC is pleased to announce the publication of Working Paper n° 61 by Anastasia Protassov, currently a PhD student at the University of Lille, working on a thesis in geography and IFEAC scholarship holder.
The Working paper is dedicated to the analysis of water management in the Ferghana Valley, with a focus on hydraulic infrastructure, the impact of climate change, and the dynamics between the three bordering countries.
Key words: Fergana valley, irrigation, infrastructure, hydropolitics, climate change.
Abstract
Situated in the heart of Central Asia, the Fergana valley is shared among Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. Besides its particularly complex borders, the valley has also inherited an intricate hydraulic system from the Soviet era, creating a strong interdependence among states despite their independence more than thirty years ago. With the impact of climate change on water resources, the fragile balance of water management and distribution now seems to be undermined. By focusing on hydraulic infrastructure, such as reservoirs, this article aims to understand and analyse the contemporary modalities of power revolving around water management.
