Central Asian post-independence media and communication industries, professional practices, education, persisting and evolving values, and traditions remain critically understudied with a notable scarcity of research and scholarly publications on the complex and increasingly changing communicative ecology landscape of this region. Mapping the Media and Communication Landscape of Central Asia: An Anthology of Emerging and Contemporary Issues addresses this gap in literature by exploring, analyzing, and shedding light to the field, practice, research and critical inquiry of media and mass communication in four countries in Central Asia—Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. This book includes local authors as well as new and emerging researchers from this region to contextualize the issues explored and provide a supportive dialogue between different points of view.

This book will help fill the gap in the dearth of textbooks/manuals on journalism, media, and communications programs, primarily in Central Asian universities, as well as in international institutions taking an interdisciplinary approach to Central Asian studies or post-Soviet communication and media practices. The lack of research and scholarly articles on complex and increasingly changing media, journalism and mass/digital communication in Central Asia can be overcome with the help of this anthology, as it will serve as fundamental reading for both researchers and university teachers in Central Asia. The chapters in this volume are authored by researchers from the region who wrote their chapters based on their research and recently completed or ongoing master’s and doctoral theses. This approach was used to ensure that the latest research in the field was included in this volume, which is often not published in a collection of works that contextualize the issues under investigation. By pairing new and emerging researchers with established authors, the editors have also ensured a supportive dialogue between different perspectives. With this book, we hope to contribute to overcoming the dearth of works on Central Asia, both for academic knowledge and for undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of journalism, media and communications. The authors of this book used both qualitative and quantitative research methods from various disciplines (ethnography/anthropology, sociology, media/communications, education, politics, etc.).
